Soon after giving birth to a baby, one of the first issues that most women have to deal with is the reclaiming of the figure they had before pregnancy. Once the baby has been born, most women will immediately lose an average of about ten pounds. This still leaves a considerable amount of weight to eliminate, and for most women, shedding these excess pounds is easier wished for than done, especially if they have made the decision to breastfeed their baby. If your infant takes all his nutrition directly from you, you have to make sure that your breast milk contains as much nutrients as it possibly can. This can be jeopardized if you go on a diet program before your baby is completely weaned.
Maintain a Healthy Level of Caloric Intake
Until a few years ago, it was generally believed that breastfeeding women must consume an extra 500 calories daily on top of their regular diet, which was said to ensure the continuous production of nutritious breast milk. According to new studies however, women can actually sufficiently nourish their babies even on a regular diet, as long as they consume a balanced amount of foods from all the different food groups. This kind of calorie intake will also make it much easier for them to lose their baby weight.
Higher Fluid Consumption Can Help in Dieting and Breastfeeding
New mothers are always advised to drink plenty of water in order to boost the production of breast milk. This is definitely true, but an increased amount of breast milk is not the only advantage that new mothers can get from drinking a lot of fluids. This can also help them speed up the process of weight loss as well as keep their bodies clean and free of harmful toxins.
Lose Your Weight Gradually
Hundreds of rapid weight loss programs abound in the Internet these days. Health experts strongly discourage women from enrolling with these programs, especially if they have just given birth and are breastfeeding their child. However, the temptation can be very strong especially for new mothers who are eager to return to their pre-pregnancy form. You do have to keep in mind that besides being naturally dangerous in itself, a rapid weight loss program might also trigger the production of toxins in the body which can be passed on to your baby through your breast milk.
Consult with Your Doctor
Before attempting any kind of diet program while breastfeeding, you should first ask for your doctor’s opinions. While there are several safe and proven methods of losing weight even while breastfeeding an infant, it is always better to play it safe. After all, it is not only your own wellbeing that you will be putting at risk, but your baby’s health as well. Once you get the approval of your doctor to follow a particular diet program, make sure you stick to the recommendations.
