Detox Dieting: The Pros and Cons

For the past few years, detox dieting has been the talk of the town in many social circles. This is probably due largely to the influence of Hollywood superstars who claim to have benefited a lot from this revolutionary new diet program. True to the nature of most people, the public immediately followed suit and began to enroll in detox dieting programs all over the country. While many individuals have really been able to reap the rewards of this weight loss program, it is worthy of noting that detox dieting, as well as any other form of dieting for that matter, poses several health risks especially if you don’t follow the program instructions precisely, or if you have been suffering from any medical condition before beginning the program.

Pros of Detox Dieting

With the increased amounts of junk food and chemically preserved ingredients that go into our bodies every single day, it is not really surprising to know that certain toxic materials are present in our bodies at any given time. If not addressed immediately, this can trigger a host of serious health problems. Detox dieting is very effective in flushing out these toxins from the body. As soon as the harmful wastes are eliminated, the body’s digestive and gastrointestinal systems are improved by a mile, effectively boosting your metabolism and speeding up the weight loss process.

Cons of Detox Dieting

As with any other diet program, there are also a few drawbacks to this type of weight loss. One of the most glaring downsides of a detox diet is that you will not be allowed to consume many kinds of foods, most of which are those are regular parts of your previous diet. Among the prohibited foods are milk, fish, eggs, refined sugars and sodium. There is actually a logic behind this kind of food restraint, but you should also consider that some types of nutrients can only be found from these banned food items. If you stop eating those foods, you will be depriving your body of much needed vitamins and minerals.

Another major disadvantage of the detox diet is that its stringent rules might make it very difficult for the average person to stick with the program until adequate results are achieved. It can also be hard to keep following the rules of your diet in instances when you will be dining out with your family at a restaurant or at a friends place.

Despite these disadvantages, the popularity of detox dieting as an effective method of weight loss continues to rise. In fact, if you follow the instructions included in the program, you actually have a huge chance of success, as long as your efforts don’t wane before you have finished the pogram.
